Okay guys… so I think I found some fries that I like more than the garlic fries at the Ivy Tavern. I have been told to visit Duck Fat in Portland, Maine for quite some time now. Mae and I decided to finally make the trip as a small birthday get away for her. Duck Fat serves Belgian style fries that have been fried in.. you guessed it… DUCK FAT. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. That’s really all I can say… SO HERE WE GO!

ALRIGHTY! So these french fries are absolutely insane guys. They are definitely the number one contender at the moment. It truly pains me to say that they Ivy has nothing on them. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the Ivy. I was there literally 20 minutes ago, and you bet your ass I ate the shit out of those fries… Duck Fat was phenomenal.
First things first. These babies smelled INSANE. The restaurant itself just smelled like beautiful, perfectly spiced spuds. The texture is really what got me going. They had the perfect amount of crunch. I have a tear in my eye as a write this. They were somehow almost flakey on the very outside? I don’t know if frying it in the duck fat had something to do with it, but I can sure as hell say that they are doing something very very very right. The inside was perfectly fluffy. Just the right combo of crunchy yet soft.
The flavor was where I truly felt like these fries took the gold. They had a good earthy potato flavor as well as a nice richness from the duck fat. The seasoning was insane. Perfectly salty with a hint of fresh cracked black pepper. Oh… and it gets even better… this cone of beautiful fried taters was fresh to DEATH. They hand cut these puppies on the daily. Value is where I dock a good point or two. I would have paid about a dollar less, but again, they have to make money somehow, and the amount of fries we got was pretty intense. Overall, I have to say that I was so happy I could throw up. A good fresh french fry really gets me going.
OH.MY.GOD. I didn’t even mention the dipping sauces. Mae and I chose curry mayo as well as garlic mayo and WOW! My only complaint is that I wish there was more. Oh and P.S. … you should also try their homemade sodas… absolutely incredible.
Check it out my friends! Definitely worth the visit while in Maine! Keep me updated with any recommendations and as always, stay salty my friends.
